Today we made the drive over to Tarpon Springs. This area was settled in the late 1800's by the Greeks for the Sponge Industry. It still maintains a lot of that flavour today. There was a short film on the history of the sponge industry and the Greek community.
There was sponge for sale everywhere you looked.
Lots of Greek Bakeries and Restaurants. Don Dimitroff would have loved this Baklava!
We had Chicken Slouvaki at Costa's a family run restaurant. Made me think of my old buddy Dino.
Here's a classic that was in the Parking Lot.
We left for Honeymoon Island to do a little shelling, but after a half hour on the beach there were no good shells to be found.
We worked our way down the coast and stopped in at Crabby Bills in Indian Shores. Chris had an urge for Coconut Shrimp!
From there we made our way down to Fort DeSoto National Park to try and catch the sunset and hopefully spot a few dolphins or manatees.
Checked out the fort that was built for the Spanish American war and is currently being restored.
We never spotted any dolphins or manatees, but witnessed a beautiful sunset.
We got out of there just in time as there was a big storm brewing behind us. Stopped in to see Cal, Marcelle and Tiffany, had a great visit before getting home at 2:00 am.
Another fabulous full day!
