Savannah - Day 2

Monday, October 20, 2014

Savannah was established in 1733 by James Oglethorpe.  He laid out the city in a grid broken up by parks which served as defensive positions and fire breaks.  It makes for a beautiful city today with beautiful moss filled trees and restored buildings.

We took a tour of the downtown area to get a bit of the history and to get a feel for the area.

After the tour we headed to Leopold's Ice Cream which was established in 1914.

We walked much of the town visiting many of the parks we had seen on the tour.

Lynn has been talking about going to Paula Dean's for dinner ever since we set this trip up.   Paula Dean is on the cooking network and features Southerrn dishes.   As we approached one of the parks, who is there but none other than Paula Dean!!!  She was taping a segment for her new Paula Dean network.

She was kind enough to take a minute for a quick pic with Lynn.

This is a beautiful city!!

This is Mrs Wilke's Boarding House. They serve lunch from 11:00-2:00.   The lineup goes around the block.   We hope to go before we leave.

Most parks have beautiful statues erected.

It is a wonderful place to walk around.  You always feel safe (as long as you stay within the parameters that they advised us on).

We had dinner at the Six Pence Tavern.  Great Shepherd's Pie!

We have certainly been blessed with wonderful weather.
