Magnolia Plantation & Gardens

Thursday, November 6, 2014

We've been wanting to visit a plantation since we started this vacation.  We headed back towards Charleston to visit Magnolia Plantation & Gardens.
A beautiful entrance shrouded by Oaks.

This was a rice plantation that has remained in the same family through the American Revolution and the Civil War until today.
The Gardens are extensive and beautiful.

I love this shot.

The highlight was a tour of the slave cabins.  4 of the 11 are still standing from the 1800s.  Each cabin housed two families. Some of them housed African Americans into the 1990's!!

There were two types of Slave Plantations, Cotton and sugar plantations where slaves were chained together in the fields to avoid running away.  Rice plantations like this one were managed by a task system.   Each slave was assigned a task each day.  They were not chained as they worked in the rice fields all day and had to be able to avoid alligators and poisonous snakes.
They started working in the fields when they were 10 and their life expectancy was about 20-30 years old.
Very sobering.

We ended the night with a great dinner at Clark's Inn back in Santee.
