Road to Tofino

Tuesday, April 7, 2015

Today we set out for Tofino.

The drive there is spectacular (I've run out of superlatives on this trip).  We started up the east coast of the island towards Nanaimo.  Again pictures don't do any of this justice.   This is a shot of Saabich Peninsula from the Malagasy Lookout on the Malahat Drive. This is a salt water inlet.

We stopped for a great breakfast at the Pioneer House and then drove through Chemainus a town noted for its many murals on the sides of most of the buildings in town.

We made a stop at Coombs Market, noted for its Goats on the roof.  Unfortunately, they don't put the goats out until May 24.

This busker had a good raspy voice.  Too bad his guitar was out of tune.

Stocked up with groceries, we headed further inland to Cathedral Grove, home of some huge Douglas fir trees.
This one that Ritchie is standing in was gutted by a fire many years ago.

At 800 years, this is the oldest one in the forest!

The drive along highway 4 through the interior on the way to Port Alberni is nothing short of spectacular with snow covered mountains along the way.

Lunch break!

Once on the west coast we took the Pacific Rim Highway north to Tofino.  We were staying at the Crystal Cove Resort and were welcomed by this awesome bear! ............I want him!

Here's our cabin, complete with fireplace, hot tub and a great view.  Things are a little pricey in Tofino.  This 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom cabin was over $900 for 2 nights!!

Our view.
High tide......

........Low tide.
That's Lynn and I in the foreground.

I can't say enough about the drive.  From Salt water bays, to mountains, to mountain streams, fresh water lakes and then the Ocean view of the Pacific Rim, words or pictures can't do this justice. Between Hawaii and BC, I think I've got enough content for a Tromper slide night!
