Friends from Florida

When we were in Florida last year, I was determined to go Bass Fishing. With time running out, I was lined up with Frank Tennity, a guide from Upstate New York who has a winter home near Lake Wales in Florida. We had a great day fishing, but what was really great about it was the way we hit it off. When he and his wife Melody took me back to rendezvous with Chris at a WalMart, the four of us ended up talking for over 3 hours in the parking lot!

We've talked all summer about getting together at their place on Lake Honeyoye, one of the Finger lakes just outside Rochester. We finally got together last Thursday at their beautiful cedar cottage.

We had a wonderful day sitting down by the water most of the day and having a load of laughs. They are truly wonderful people.

Chris and I were going to stay in Rochester for the night and Frank said that I had to take my honey to "The Christmas Tree Shop". Well.........we spent over two hours in the store and Chris declared that it was the "Best" store she had ever been in. This is definitely a "chick's store" and many woman were walking up to me and patting me on the back saying what a brave guy I was!!

I owe you one Frank!!!!

New Wheels

Wednesday wasn't only my retirement celebration.
There was also Good News and Sad News.
First the Sad News. Wednesday was our last day with our beloved Poo Mobile, our 1993 Dodge Shadow that has served us so well over the last 10 years.
And the Good News! We replaced it with a "newer" 2006 Grand Caravan SXT. My retirement van!

It only has 23,000 km. and features some "Old Man" perks, Power Side Doors and Rear Hatch! Also has Stow n Go, DVD with Remote Headphones (never used), 6 CD player, 8 Way Power Seats, 3.8 L engine, yada yada yada........
It will become my new boat accessory and our travel vehicle. The plan is to eventually replace our 2001 Caravan (currently at 310,000 km and still running great!) with a VW Beetle once the old van bites the dust.

A big thanks to Kim & John at Cambridge Chrysler for looking after us so well!

Thanks for the Memories

Question: How do you thank friends (who were also co-workers) for over 38 years of great memories?
Answer: You can't.
Last Wednesday was a big day for me. My last hurrah at my place of employment for all those years. It was a wonderful day and experience and one that I will never forget. It was great to see so many old as well as recent friends and co-workers. One of the most gratifying feelings was seeing Chris acknowledged for her role in my success.
Here is a video that they put together for the occasion. The first song, "Riding Down the Canyon" is an old Gene Autry song that my Dad recorded with the Dofasco Humdingers around 1950 and is performed here by the FishGuts.

I probably enjoyed the roasting as much if not more than anybody. Its funny how the Craig family thrives on verbal abuse!!
I think the highlight was having my entire family present including my brother and sister, wife, sons and their wives and all 4 grand children.
We followed up the celebration with dinner at Kelseys with the kids and Paul & Jean Kennedy.
I will hopefully have pictures to add once I receive them.
Thank You everyone for a lifetime memory. It couldn't have been better.
Happy Trails................

Something Missing?

Has anyone noticed that there has been someone missing in my Blogs? That's right, my sweetheart has not seen much of me since retirement!! Between Tromps & Fishing Trips & Fishing Tournaments, I have not been home much to drive her crazy!! How many wives would give their husbands that much freedom, especially right after retiring!!
Now that things are slowly starting to settle down, we will start being able to enjoy more time together, but lately all I have been doing is waving goodbye to her.

FishGuts Fall Classic

Well, FishGuts 8 is now in the books. I had another great trip with good friends, good food and good music. The only thing missing was good fishing!!
Paul Kennedy and I left late Tuesday morning and were joined by brother Bud later that night. The majority of the gang (FrogHawg, Gill, Mr. Science, Dell, Moe, Twang) arrived on Wednesday which featured my "Official" Retirement Party!! Suffice to say that I survived to live another day. Nothing like celebrating with good friends.
Son Pogger (Paul) and the Doiron brothers, "Rob Bob" and Rookie brother "Butch" arrived on Thursday morning. The week featured mostly clear, cool, pleasant weather although quite windy at times. The fishing was tough (not only for us, but for all that we talked to). I had the pleasure of meeting many OFN (internet) friends who were staying close by at Lakair. Got a chance to fish with Lew, the Musky Master, but came up empty handed although we had a very enjoyable and relaxing time.

We had many excellent fires, spectacular scenery and memorable meals (Pulled Pork.....mmmmm) along with an excellent fish fry that included Papa's Fabulous French Fries and Onion Rings.
Thanks for a great week guys!

Mercer Magic

People are always asking me why I would drive 100 kms to work at Bass Pro on weekends. The following story might help explain it.
I was working at Bass Pro a couple of weeks ago and I met this really cool customer. His name is Jacob, he is almost 8 years old and his Mom told me that he suffers from severe autism, and that he goes through aggressive therapy through the week. The two of them had discovered fishing together a few weeks previous and it had done miracles for Jacob. It took him to a much better place. Jacob was already quite knowledgeable and took a keen interest in everything I was showing him.
I told them about Dave Mercer coming to the store on the 13th and that Jacob would really enjoy meeting him. I contacted Dave and George Wallace (BPS Promotion Manager) and they arranged to meet Jacob in George's Office before Dave did his presentation.
I met Jacob and his Mom in the store on the 13th and what followed was truly magical! I first introduced them to George who was busy outside Bar-B-Qing hotdogs for Ducks Unlimited.

George dropped everything and led Jacob all over the store gathering goodies

By the time he was done, Big Dave was in his office waiting to meet Jacob and sign all the gathered paraphernalia. As you all know, Dave is awesome with all kids, but he was exceptional with Jacob. I really can't describe the feelings I had at that time, watching all this magic happening.

Later on he met Dave Chong and Chonger spent a ton of time talking and listening to Jacob.

His Mother says that she found light coming from under Jacob's bedroom door after he had gone to bed that night. He had his shirt, hat, lures, Dave "Bobble Head" and all his other new found treasures all lined up on his bed and had his new LED hat light illuminating them in the dark.
The fishing industry is blessed to have people like the 2 Daves (Mercer and Chong).

I witnessed something truly magical this weekend.
What also impressed me was the length George Wallace went to ensure Jacob had a truly wonderful day. I see Bass Pro continually getting trashed on this site and I find it particularly frustrating when I know of all the good works that BPS continually performs and so often done under the radar, not doing it for the publicity but because "Its the right thing to do"
It wasn't only Jacob that was the beneficiary of all this attention. I also saw the joy in his Mother's eyes as she was capturing these beautiful pictures through the lens of her camera. She was obviously getting as much out of this new experience as Jacob was and was truly overwhelmed. She is as brave as Jacob in dealing with the day to day challenges that were being masked by this magical moment.
Combine that with meeting great customers like all the OFNers I meet and a fabulous team of co-workers in the Fishing Dept. and you might get an idea of what makes it all worthwhile!
Kind of helps explain what makes that 100 km drive a non-event.

BPS Tournament at Balsam Lake

Sept. 11,
I no sooner returned home from my Tromp on Monday and I had to get the boat and get prepared for Wednesday's Bass Pro Associate's Tournament on Balsam Lake . This was the fourth stop in the BPS Tournament Series. The top ten teams would qualify for the Bass Pro Classic on Lake Couchiching. My son Paul and I were sitting in 11th place going into the tournament so needed a good performance to move up to qualify for the CLASSIC.
Our strategy was to travel up a long narrow channel to Mitchell's Bay which is full of stumps and appeared to be Hawg Heaven. After 3 hours of beating our brains out and only one fish to show, we headed back to the big lake to hit a few other "spots". We ended up with only 4 bass (5 fish team limit) in the livewell and only weighed in 5.68 pounds, but enough to qualify 10th for the Classic (whew!!). It was a very tough day on the water and on shore. To add insult to injury, I backed the van up over my son's tackle bag and totally destroyed it!! Some of the Bass Pro staff were introduced to many new words that they had not heard from the Bassman before!!!
Despite all the difficulties, it was a beautiful day and much better than working. Besides, any time you can spend a day on the water with one of your sons is priceless.
Its not important how you get to the dance, but how you do when you get there. We're both looking forward to our chance at redemption on Lake Couchiching on October 15 and a chance at the $1000 first prize!

The "Lion's Head Hustle"

Time to start catching up......
I continue to be very busy in my retirement 8O)
I left last Thursday, September 4 to join "The Trompers" for 5 days on their Annual Tromp on the Bruce Trail. This is a group mostly made up of "OLD" Dofasco Sales employees. They have been hiking the Bruce Trail together for the last 25 years and completed the Bruce Trail in 2004. I have been fortunate to have been involved with them since the "Mulmur March" (every tromp has a name) in September of 2002.
The goal this year was to return to Lion's Head to retrace some of the most spectacular trails that the Bruce has to offer. My brother Bud's grandson (my great nephew) Sean joined us this year. He is a seasoned veteran at the age of 14, having already climbed the Inca Trails to Macchu Piccu in Peru in 2007 with his Grandpa!!
The scenery was spectacular, fellowship fabulous, food unbelievable, facilities wonderful and weather co-operative!!
I would like to thank my fellow Tromper friends; Doc, Pete, Bag, Sparky, Dorsal, Sean, "9 Card" Parker and the Tromping Spirit (George) for another great trip and wonderful memories.
You guys are the best!

Day 5

It's already feeling like retirement. I've spent the last two mornings sitting with my dear wife Chris sitting in the backyard listening to the birds and discussing all the wonderful changes in our life. We stopped by yesterday to greet our M&M kids, Miranda & Maddy after their first day in school. We spent a couple of hours at Battlefield Park, had an ice cream cone at the Stoney Creek Dairy, a favourite haunt of ours when we were going together when I was 15 (25 cent milkshakes!)
I've been going pretty steady trying to tidy up loose ends, meeting my Financial Planner, going to see the M&Ms at Karate. So busy, I missed a lunch date with my buddies today. Tonight I am getting ready to leave tomorrow for four days at Lion's Head with the Trompers, an eclectic bunch of buddies that have hiked the Bruce Trail end to end over the last 20 years.
I checked my favourite message board tonight www.OFNCommunity.com to find that the fishing community lost a good friend. Its kind of strange, I never personally met GaryV, but he was a friend thanks to the virtual highway. His Personal Statement on the board was the following:

If life was simply a bowl of cherries we would probably start looking for the pits, enjoy life, treasure the good times, keep the good memories with you, and whenever possible live your life to the fullest.

Words we should all live by.
Rest in peace Gary.

My Sympathies

To all you poor slobs that had to drag your butts out of bed today to trundle off to work.
Cheers!

Thanks for the Fly-by

Came home from Bass Pro tonight to be greeted by two fly-bys.
First came this guy.

He was quickly (very quickly) followed by these guys:

They all left together...

I would like to thank whoever arranged such a cool fly-by to celebrate my retirement.
Tomorrow morning I hope to get up early, make a coffee and sit on the front porch to start my new hobby called "Watching people go to work!"
Have a good one folks. Don't work too hard!
