A Marathon Shopping Spree

November 26, 2008
Well today was a big day for Chris and her Mom. The much anticipated opening of the Christmas Tree Shops in Buffalo had finally happened and I had promised to take them over for the day. We crossed the border before noon and had to make our obligatory first stop at the Dollar Store where Mae spent $28 and never finished the last 3 aisles.

Onward to the Christmas Tree Shops.

Now if you remember, thanks to our American friends, Frank & Melody Tennity, Chris had discovered the Christmas Tree Shops in Rochester back in October (see Friends from Florida ). I went in with Chris and her Mom and I was done in about 15 minutes.

I went back to the van and read the paper for about an hour and then put in a DVD I had been waiting to watch, "My Pal Trigger" starring Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and Gabby Hayes that was 79 minutes in length! Finally, after 3 Hours they came out for air!!!!
Chris spent $46 and Mae spent $98

Now I ask you, how could anyone spend 3 hours in one store?????
I know I can spend three hours in a new Bass Pro Shops, but of course that is much different!!

From there we went to Smokey Bones where we enjoyed a great meal and then to Tops on the way home to pick up 39 cents a pound Turkeys.
A short stop at the border where we declared our $200 worth of purchases and we were waived through!!
A great day was had by all.

Almost Santa

November 23, 2008
Went to work at Bass Pro this weekend. Sunday was an interesting day. I got my picture taken in the Big Guy's chair with my buddy Jordan, one of Santa's Helpers when he's not working the Fishing Dept.

There was a bit of panic in the store when Santa didn't show up! (Must have been busy in his workshop). They approached me about being a stand-in, but Niko had already started to don the apparel. Man that would have been a blast!!

A New Experience

November 20, 2008
Some of the Bass Pro Shop boys invited me along to go Float Fishing in New York State. This was a totally new experience for me. Despite attending a great concert by Great Big Sea (click here for video)the night before at Hamilton Place along with my fellow FishGut members, I was up at 4:00 am and we rendezvoused at the border and 7 of us headed for Olcott, NY in 3 vehicles. This time of year is a float or fly fisherman's buffet with the creeks offering a combination of Coho, Chinook, Steelhead, and Brown Trout. There were vehicles in the parking lot from Delaware, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Although everyone was wearing waders, they made sure that a newbie like me could manage to fish from shore.
The weather was much milder down by the water and was a winter wonderland.

I got a new found respect for those that use float reels. I tried to get a handle on the float reels, but it mostly ended with some frustration. My left hand was just not communicating with my right hand.
The boys caught a few fish at our first location at 18 Mile Creek and after some discussion it was decided to move to Oak Orchard. Unfortunately, the 30 minute drive took a little more than an hour as the lead vehicle tried to remember how to get there!!
The second location was a little more difficult to access. The thing I discovered today was that all creeks are always at the bottom of the hill, never at the top!!!! lol I did a lot more climbing than I anticipated.

Christian is seen here with the equipment of choice. A float reel attached to about an 11 foot rod. The line has a float (they didn't like me calling them bobbers) about 3 to 5 feet above a tiny, tiny size 16 hook that is hooked into a small bag of roe (that you can see just above the cork handle). The line between the float and the hook has a series of small split shot attached to it in order to allow the roe to drift at the right depth according to the current.

I also got a new found respect for those WWI soldiers that had to slop through all that mud in Europe. I was told that if I walked to the end of the island it would be clear enough for me to cast without leaving land. What they didn't tell me was that I would have to walk for a mile through a path of muck and to get there!! You should have seen my boots and pants when I finally returned (up that steep hill) to my van.

By this time I had resorted to putting a spinning reel on my float rod which worked out a little bit better for this "rookie".

Niko was the one with the hot hand landing several browns and a steelhead that I just missed getting a picture of.

One of the things I noticed was that there was a lot of retying involved. This was not easy in the cold, especially if you had just had your hands in the freezing water helping to release a fish.

As the sun was setting we returned to our vehicles and Niko, Jason, Christian, John and myself returned to Buffalo to enjoy a meal at Smokey Bones.

We had to stop at our competition (Gander Mountain) where everyone found some hot deals.

r

John couldn't believe that they had squirrel skins for $5.00!!

Although I didn't catch anything, it was still a great day shared with a great bunch of guys. I would do it again next year.
Thanks Guys.

M&M Lunch

Tuesday, November 18, 2008
Ever since I retired, I have promised to take Miranda & Maddy out of school for lunch. My first suggestion was to have lunch in their school with their friends, but they could hardly breathe when I suggested that 8O)
So today was the day! I got to their school just before noon and busted them out! We made our way to the restaurant of their choice (McDonalds). We had some excellent discussion about School, New York and Pirates while we munched on our delicacies.

I explained to them that when I was just a few years older than them, I could buy a McDonald's hamburger, fries and a pop and get change back from my dollar.
Today's Bill - $21.00

We had a really great time and I got them back to school with 2 minutes to spare.

FishGuts Practix

Monday, November 17, 2008
As most of you know, I am a proud member of the FishGuts, an eclectic group of renegade intellectuals that are my fishing buddies and friends. We have been together now for about 8 years and are proud to say that we aren't any better than we were a few years ago. Our motto is "Dedicated to the pursuit of Good Fun, Good Fishing and a Little Music along the way".

We got together at our Band Manager Paul Kennedy's house for our bi-weekly practix.

If you noticed, we usually sit in a circle, leaving room in the middle for our imaginary "Fire". Practixes are very much like sitting around the fire up north, drinking, laughing and just enjoying each other's company.

My brother Bud is our only natural musician. The SOB can pick up a tune after only hearing it a couple of times!

Moe is an accomplished shaker musician and also plays guitar and bass.

Barry is our only real guitarist and sings most of the "Starbucks" songs and Ed is still working on learning the mandolin.

And of course there is me, still trying to learn to play the guitar after almost 50 years.

Here's our Manager (a loose term) Paul with his bride Jean who is also our featured chick singer for "You are My Sunshine"!

We put this tune together a few years ago for a special Christmas CD that Ed's son-in-law was putting together. Hope you enjoy.

We used to have a website, but it is currently down for reconstruction. One of my "50 Things to do Before I Die"

Rachel

November 14, 2008

Paul sent us this picture of Rachel doing one of my favourite things...kicking leaves. She is on the verge of walking!

Karate Kids

One of the things I've been missing recently is attending the M&M's Karate lessons.
They are instructed by Sensi Robinson who is a fifth degree black belt and not only a former Canadian Champion, but is also in the World Karate Hall of Fame!
She is great to watch. She and her assistants have total control of a class of about 40 and she doesn't take any crap from the kids or the parents. It is really great to watch. I think she is a great inspiration for the girls.

I have seen a real improvement in Miranda & Maddy since they started.

It was also nice to pick up Scrincher after our return. My sister Judy looked after him and he came home relaxed and stress free.

Lancaster to Home

Tuesday, November 11, 2008
We left Lancaster and stopped at the Bass Pro in Harrisburg on the way home. I got my squashed penny from the store. I believe this is my 18th Bass Pro that I've been to. Only 34 to go!!

Had a friendly discussion with Darrell the Greeter.

From my favourite store, we headed to Rochester to stop at Chris' new favourite "Christmas Tree Shops" to pick up a few more treasures.

We arrived home at 11:00 pm. We sure had a fabulous time. We hope to visit both Williamsburgsburg and Lancaster again in the next year.

Williamsburg to Lancaster

November 10, 2008

We finished up a fabulous week at Williamsburg by going back to the huge Yankee Candle store where Chris dipped a few candles.

We also had to take one more dramatic drive down the Colonial Parkway. For me this was the absolute highlight. Never have I seen such dramatic colours!!

We left Williamsburg on Sunday morning and made a stop to see the Luray Caverns. Paul had told us about them earlier this summer when he was there and they were everything he said they were. Really quite amazing. http://luraycaverns.com/
We walked for a mile and a half under ground going down as far as 168 feet below the surface.

We arrived in Lancaster, PA late on Sunday. We wanted to take a few extra days to get an overview of Lancaster so that we would have a lay of the land for a future visit. We drove through Bird-In-Hand and Intercourse. We drove through covered bridges.

Monday is obviously laundry day in the Amish community as we saw clotheslines full of clothes everywhere we went.

Horse and buggies were everywhere, complete with tail lights and blinkers.

A pleasant surprise was the train museum at Strasburg. I knew that they had an operating steam train there, but had no idea how extensive it was. There was even a motel nearby that was comprised of about 30 old cabooses as rooms.

We moved on to Hershey. Chris has wanted to see this for years. The city is complete with Hershey Kisses streetlights.

And of course we had to do the Hershey Chocolate Tour.
